The unthinkable happened last night and I'm not talking about my football team Everton coming back from 2-0 down to win 3-2. Nope that was pretty cool especially if you are a an avid blue like me, but what I'm really talking about was the fact that Facebook went down for about an hour.
I only noticed because I was watching the football on the TV and browsing Twitter at the same time. It turned out that #facebookdown was the number 1 trend in the UK at the time. Not only that, but this was the second time inless than a week that Facebook was offline for a while.
It seemed that the internet had gone into meltdown because of this.
Personal trainers everywhere panicking, possibly even crying into their protein shakes, wondering how they were going to get new clients.
No way to ask people to “PM me for details bro” or “New Bootcamp starts Monday”
But imagine for just one minute if Facebook went down for good?
How would that affect your fitness business?
Losing all your friends, page likes (and maybe even your custom audiences) in one foul swoop of internet fate.
This my friend is precisely why you need to get people off Social media sites where you have no control and on to your own email list.
Now I know what you're probably thinking.
It will never happen to Facebook
Well thats where you are dead wrong my my friend, because the changing social media landscape is already underway. Instagram for example fast on it's heels among the kids and is even overtaking twitter and has grown by 100 million uses in the last year alone.
Remember Myspace or even Bebo, both of those are deader than the One Directions careers (apart from Harry), and just like One Direction in their heyday they were huge.
Moral of the story is please don't build your fitness business or any other business on someone else's land.
